Post Pandemic Music Therapy
Six months ago, back in December 2020, I tried to develop a project aimed at helping out our burners community from a specific standpoint, the mental health unbalance that has impacted pretty much all of us as an outcome of almost one year and a half of pandemic crisis and social isolation from covid19 pandemic lockdowns. Depression, anxiety, loneliness, but also fear, sometimes panic or rage, and loss and grief. This is just the tip of the iceberg of a humanity being broken by the terrible experience we all collectively shared. I wanted to help, at least within the (not so) small circle of our community, by offering something that would have brought some sort of emotional support to my brothers and sisters in dust. What I envisioned wasn’t certainly the next Zoom event with DJs and virtual kinky workshops. We already did many of those, including the DomusBurn virtual event we organized exactly one year ago. But that was one year ago, when we were still hoping the virus would have “gone away” by summer. Now we are way deeply broken, and we don’t need that shit anymore – our community needs something more meaningful than another Zoom DJ set. I thought to re-purpose the DomusBurn website into a community-focused platform designed to offer emotional support through peer-to-peer group counseling. Dustless Summer :: ChillDance Part One
I recorded this on July 10, 2020, a Friday I would have normally spent at the Nowhere festival, and very much playing live to dancefloors packed with dusty hippies. I would have also given my sets a psychedelic spin, since it was Friday. Acid Friday. But the Nowhere festival was canceled, as all other real life burners events worldwide, in this pandemic, dustless summer. It would have been my 14th Nowhere in 15 years, with just one leap year in 2018. I was a bit sad, so I started with pretty chilled, almost cinematic tunes on my decks and in my headphones, embarking soon in a 6 hours set I played just for myself and my dog, in my own social isolation state. This is the first part of the recording, the first 3 hours of chillout dance. Pretty much all 2020 tunes, with just a couple of exceptions, also for the inclusion of an amazing Portishead remix from my good friend Birdy, which I think he produced last year, not sure about that. And, to keep celebrate burners, I have also included the latest single by true Nowherians Frederika and Mike Krier, just released last July. Well, here we go. Opioid Chilldance
Earlier this week I ended up at the hospital’s emergency room for an acute pain crisis. Nothing serious, but I’ve been severely sedated, and the doctor prescribed me a couple of weeks of absolute rest, and plenty of pills, including very powerful opioids for the pain. So this morning I followed the doctor’s orders and I popped my pills, plugged into Traktor, put the headphones on, and I immersed myself for 3 hours into a psychedelic chill state that I would love to share. Enjoy it, with or without the chemical support! Note: opioid prescriptions are bad and very addictive. Try to keep them at large if you can, and always ask your doctor for alternative pain relief methods, whenever possible. If you really must, then do not abuse. You can definitely abuse dancing, it’s really good for you. Burningmax Plays 50 :: Fifty Chill Dance Tunes in the Mix
I just turned 50 years “young”, so I decided to celebrate by mixing 50 tunes! Well, at the beginning I mixed 66 songs (as for Class of ’66), but the mix was too long, over the 6h30m, and impossible to share it on MixCloud – so I had to “cut it down” to 50 tunes. F Trilogy 1/3 :: Chill the Fuck Out
I haven’t played much live this year, but I’ve been stacking up tons of massive tunes. Last month I figured out that I’ve been listening to plenty of great music that I’ve never shared with anybody else, and what’s worst is that I didn’t even tried to pass it on decks. So I said “Fuck it, let’s empty the summer crates on Traktor and see what happens”. What happened was that the selection alone took almost an entire month… and I ended up with three different mix, even if more than 90% of the tunes didn’t made the selection. Bummer. Anyway, there’s enough music to keep everybody happy: 4 hours of relaxing electronica, 2 hours of uplifting dance music, and further 90 minutes of massive beats – music for all tastes! Since the whole idea started with a “Fuck it” (without the hypocrisy of the asterisks), the decision about the name of this multiple studio DJ set was immediate: introducing Burningmax’s F Trilogy! The recent Barcelona Burning Weekend was another amazing Euroburners’ gathering. A magic place with a Gaudi-esque castle in the woods near Alcover in Catalunya, with burners friends and family from all over Europe, and the right awesome attitude from all participants. As usual, I have been pretty busy on several fronts – from leading a shift at the Gate to helping out for tear down and more, including building a Temple! Yes, the Temple of the Light at the End of the Tunnel, here are a few pictures of it on Facebook! On the DJing side, I played two techno DJ sets on Friday night and on Saturday night. I forgot to record the Friday night set, and the one on Saturday, while it was pretty good (everybody was dancing), was mostly killer tunes I already published here with some of my recents DJ sets. From remixing to producing – this is for commercial purposes, three 1’30” soundtrack for Pitti Uomo 2012’s post-event videos. Yes, commercial destination – but I didn’t sell my soul to the big fashion event. I did the soundtracks for free, and only because I have some friends who are working on Pitti’s communication, and they needed a soundtrack for the video, quickly. So I plugged my Traktor S4, explored the 1.4 Gb of loops graciously gifted by Native Instrument with the release of Traktor 2.5, and got myself at work. Result? Maybe too heavy for a posh fashion video, but I had a lot of fun! What do you think? Check out all three video soundtracks! In-Flight Entertainment 02 :: Nairobi
Technically, this one has not been mixed while flying, but while hanging out in a Maasai Mara Lodge in Kenya, right before flying back to Italy. I mixed it at a very low volume and no pre-fade listening (hence the couple of mix fuckups), so I could have been able to enjoy it in my headphones for the first time only when I was on the flight back home, a few hours later. Does it counts as in-flight entertainment? =) Also, it’s kind of different from the music I usually play – consider this something like a chillout session for a Maasai warrior!
