This summer I didn’t participate to Burning Man, nor to Nowhere or any of the other regional gathering that, after two years of covid, started popping up again. My last burn has been three years ago, back in the summer of 2019; with the 2020 and 2021 events being canceled for covid, I was really looking forward to spend the best of my summer to Nowhere in the Spanish Monegros desert. I even had the ticket, although overpriced. But I didn’t go. After exactly 20 years of deep commitment to Burning Man, I finally figured out that, while Burning Man and all related gathering and events could be fun, and yet sometimes inspiring, the entire “thing” has lost the status of “transformational platform” that once, back in my days and mostly in Larry Harvey’s days, used to be. So I lost all interest and I didn’t go. Couldn’t resell my ticket, who cares? So this was a burn off for me, even if I was ready for it – including with a bunch of new tracks that I really wanted to play live, but I’m dropping into this mix. This is dedicated to all burners. Introducing my new Burningmax Time Machine project. Starting today I will publish every month a mix that goes back in time. Not so back anyway, I’ll keep it contained to this century. Let’s start with the first instalment in the Burningmax Time Machine series, a mix entirely dedicated to the tunes I loved to play in my DJ sets, and that have been released in 2009, the year that I actually started DJing. Post Pandemic Music Therapy
Six months ago, back in December 2020, I tried to develop a project aimed at helping out our burners community from a specific standpoint, the mental health unbalance that has impacted pretty much all of us as an outcome of almost one year and a half of pandemic crisis and social isolation from covid19 pandemic lockdowns. Depression, anxiety, loneliness, but also fear, sometimes panic or rage, and loss and grief. This is just the tip of the iceberg of a humanity being broken by the terrible experience we all collectively shared. I wanted to help, at least within the (not so) small circle of our community, by offering something that would have brought some sort of emotional support to my brothers and sisters in dust. What I envisioned wasn’t certainly the next Zoom event with DJs and virtual kinky workshops. We already did many of those, including the DomusBurn virtual event we organized exactly one year ago. But that was one year ago, when we were still hoping the virus would have “gone away” by summer. Now we are way deeply broken, and we don’t need that shit anymore – our community needs something more meaningful than another Zoom DJ set. I thought to re-purpose the DomusBurn website into a community-focused platform designed to offer emotional support through peer-to-peer group counseling. Nowhere 2019 Sets: Live at KosmoZoo
Here is the first of the DJ sets I played this year at Nowhere 2009. Not the first I played this year in the Monegros desert, but probably the one where I had more fun playing. Enjoy the very funky and uplifting 2hrs sunset session (8-10PM) I played at the new amazing Belgian barrio KosmoZoo. I kicked the DJ set off with a very funky deep house tune I really love, then jumped immediately into Chicago house, mostly exploring the production of UK-based house label Soul Revolution, that I have recently discovered on BandCamp. At around half set I moved to UK garage and bass music, I dropped some afro-jamaican-brazilian percussions, and I finally closed the set with a bit of progressive deep house tunes. The final part of the set has been epic, a desert classic. A night dust storm was approaching, while the sunset painted the sky in reds and blacks, and the first drops of rain started coming down. Meanwhile, the KosmoZoo crew was protecting speakers and electronics from rain and securing tarps from the wind, I was playing a remixed version of Nathan Fake’s “The Sky was Pink”, and everybody kept dancing until the end of the set. Are you ready to go back in the days? Not just the Nowhere days, I mean the real deal of the halcyon days of techno. So here we go, here is your time machine. Check out another of my Nowhere 2016’s DJ sets from the Garden of Joy’s residency, a set almost completely played with massive tunes from… last century! True, you’ll hear (and dance to) some of the best underground hits from the ’90s, early 2000, and a few tunes also from the ’80s. As I said, the halcyon days of old geezer ravers like me. I always drop the occasional classic tune (or loop) in my DJ sets, but I’ve been dreaming to play an entire set with classic hits from back in the days for a while, and I finally did it last summer at Nowhere. The Nowhere festival has now consolidated Acid Friday as a tradition on the Friday of the week-long event. On Acid Friday all art, workshop, altered consciousness and of course music get a psychedelic spin. Being a resident at the Funktion One-propelled theme camp (barrio) Garden of Joy, I have been embracing over the last years Acid Friday with a DJ performance focused on delivering psychedelic beats for our dancefloor. I haven’t played much live this year, but I’ve been stacking up tons of massive tunes. Last month I figured out that I’ve been listening to plenty of great music that I’ve never shared with anybody else, and what’s worst is that I didn’t even tried to pass it on decks. So I said “Fuck it, let’s empty the summer crates on Traktor and see what happens”. What happened was that the selection alone took almost an entire month… and I ended up with three different mix, even if more than 90% of the tunes didn’t made the selection. Bummer. Anyway, there’s enough music to keep everybody happy: 4 hours of relaxing electronica, 2 hours of uplifting dance music, and further 90 minutes of massive beats – music for all tastes! Since the whole idea started with a “Fuck it” (without the hypocrisy of the asterisks), the decision about the name of this multiple studio DJ set was immediate: introducing Burningmax’s F Trilogy! Burningmax Live :: 2015 Barcelona Burning Bash :: Groove
My three DJ sets at the Barcelona Burning Bash Weekend (also and even better known as BBB) are immediately available online by popular demand. Over the last months, while I have been recording all my DJ sets, I never had the time to actually timecode them, upload them to MixCloud, and create the relative blog posts. But this time here they are, merely one week after the event, and all three of them! So here we go, a deep techno set with some rave, old school moments, one morning dance set for a crowd who still wanted to keep grooving, and a sweet afternoon set in the sun by a pool – all in the same blog post, for faster sharing! One technical note: since we had some problens with acoustics at the main stage of BBB, the sets played there have very little bass – I guess you can fix that manually by pumping the bass up in your device. The poolside set has a more balanced sound, and very chilly dance tunes. LoveHate :: Live in Vienna
Just a week after releasing the LoveHate double DJ session I had the opportunity to perform a double DJ set at the Vienna Burning Ball, the first gathering organized by the Austrian community of burners. Of course I went for a LoveHate Live session, playing half an hour of Love-inspired uplifting groovy tunes at 2-2.30AM, and then kicking in and closing the event with one hour of techno beats with the 4.30-5.30AM Hate-inspired slot. The Vienna Burners managed to sold out their first event packing the central venue Garage X with the Vienna crowd, but also gathering burners from everywhere around Europe – the venue was packed with truly beautiful people. I had a stupid accident the night before flying to Vienna but I decided to travel anyway, so I ended up going to the party and DJing on a wheelchair, while the next day I had to go to the hospital in Vienna. Anyway, I’m glad I went to Vienna – wheelchair and hospital on a side, it’s been a great experience. I loved it, and I hated it. Pretty much like this mix. =) Enjoy the Love. More Amphora DJ sets from Burning Man 2013. This time I had the pleasure and the honor of “opening” for one of my favorite DJ posse on the Playa, Space Cowboys. At their “classic” Wednesday party at the Trash Fence Space Cowboy asked for the collaboration of all the top art cars on the playa – including Amphora of course. More than a dozen sound systems blasting the same music being broadcasted live from Unimog, the mighty sound system art car of the San Francisco DJ collective – and I provided the opening DJ set for the entire trip of Amphora till the party location, making sure to pump it up enough so to get the crowd ready for the all-night party mood. Burningmax Live at Nowhere :: A Night at the Garden of Joy
Not one of my best DJ sets at Nowhere this year, but definitely the longest one. I had a two hour DJ set 2-4AM, but the next DJ didn’t show up and, at 6AM, I stretched it until the full sunrise at 7AM, so it ended up to be a full 5hrs set that actually travels across deep house, techno, trance and descends into bliss tunes for the sunrise. My third time at Rumpus in the last year, and the infamous London party is growing bigger and better. At its third anniversary, Rumpus “ramped up” to a larger venue, leaving behind the historic venue in North London in favor of the much larger, 12-rooms multistage Coronet Theatre on the South bank of the Thames. It’s been a very good Rumpus, the way parties should be! For the first time at Rumpus I didn’t close the dj session, but I was at the end of the night anyway, with a DJ set scheduled between 3AM and 4Am. I had a great feedback from the session, with the room packed and everybody down to dance, sweet! Third mixdeck in the trilogy series I dedicated to the powerful sound of the Barcelona-based independent label Suara Music, and here we go with another cat cover. After the Groovy Wild Catz and the Acid Catz mixdeck, it’s now time to explore the nu-disco and funky soul of Suara, with a selection that I’m sure will make you dance like it’s 1979 – or 1999 – or better said 2013, since the Suara sound it’s always infused with a very contemporary massive bass and techno beat, even when they go disco and funky! With this mixdeck I officially close my trilogy tribute to Suara Music, meaning that starting from the next mix there will be a larger variety of labels included in my mixdecks. Yesterday I published a live DJ set that is tied to one of my saddest memories in DJing, but good thing I also have good ones. Like the day that I decided to explore the entire production of Suara Music, a Barcelona-based independent label that is, as they say on their website, “all about music and cats”. As a matter of fact, all the releases artwork of Suara feature a cat, some of them pretty wild – I love it! (Yes, I love cats too). Suara Music is run by Coyu, one of my favorite artists, often featured as producer or remixer on the tracks I play in my mixes and DJ sets – sooner or later I’ll remix one of his tracks, promised! I love the Suara sound, so I decided to pay a tribute to the Barcelona label by playing a full DJset mixing only Suara Music releases. Burningmax 16 :: Hard Times Require Furious Dancing
This studio mix has been recorded while I was following the (shameful) results of the recent Italian political elections 2013. I was pretty angry for the useless vote that resulted in a non-governable country and in a political chaos and more hard times for Italy. Which made me think at my good friend, burner and raver Miss Dusty Purple, who recently added a new ink job to her tattooed body, the awesome statement “Hard Times Require Furious Dancing” – yes, the one I used for the cover art of this mixdeck. Thanks Marghe! Furious Dancing? That was exactly what I needed to forget the elections, so I plugged my headphones and started mixing. This is the result of a very pissed off studio session, so there might be a couple of minor fuck-ups in the mix, but I hope you’ll enjoy it anyway. Remember: hard times? Just dance the worries away. Burningmix 14 :: Welcome To My House
Welcome to my house. A dreamy, twisted, psychedelic, vintage, uplifting, joyful deep techno house. After all “that noise”, here are 3hrs+ of happy progressive house beats. Sure, I infiltrate everywhere techno, trance and even dubstep, but the overall mood is uplifting and playful, even when it goes into psychedelic sounds. And yes, I dropped a lot of vintage beats, including two or three original tracks from the end of the ’80s and early ’90s. It’s been a lot of fun to mix it all, I hope you’ll have fun dancing to it! I have been inspired to mix deep tech house sounds after following Laurent Garnier in his latest tour, and catching up with gigs and dancing myself to bliss 10 times in one year in Rome, Madrid, Liverpool, Munich, Barcelona and elsewhere, including at festivals like Sonar and the Monegros Desert Festival. I even traveled with friends to Paris for the special night at the Rex Club dedicated by Monsieur Garnier to his fans to celebrate his 25th career anniversary as a dj. Forget ambient, and welcome to my house. Well, more tech-infused house (not tech-house) than proper house music, but fun anyway. Add several techno twists and loops, a deep bass and a couple of eyeblinks to dubstep grooves, et voilà! It even gets a bit acid towards the end… I promise this will get your dancefloor pretty sweaty and promiscuous, if you play it to the right crowd.
