A Burningmax tribute to Larry Harvey, Burning Man’s founder and Chief Philosopher Officer. Larry Harvey passed away a couple of months ago, and June 21st has been declared Global Celebration / Day of Gratitude for Larry Harvey. I have dedicated Larry’s Gratitude Day to listening to several Larry Harvey video interviews and keynote presentations on YouTube (links below), then I decided to get some of the inspirational phrases he said out of those videos, and to mix them in a techno DJ set / studio mix. There are a couple of flaws here and there, specially with the lack of equalization of Larry’s recordings, and a couple of saturated basses here and there – but this has been a “one shot recording”, a sort of “live at home”, in my headphone. Immediacy, no post-production. I hope you’ll like it, and will get inspired too. As a matter of fact, I’m not sure if Larry would appreciate this, because, you know… techno was not his strong hat. But this is certainly the best way for me to say #thankslarry. You have been, you are and you will be one of my primary sources of inspiration, and so is the international community that spurred out of your hat. We’ll keep The Man burning. I just turned 50 years “young”, so I decided to celebrate by mixing 50 tunes! Well, at the beginning I mixed 66 songs (as for Class of ’66), but the mix was too long, over the 6h30m, and impossible to share it on MixCloud – so I had to “cut it down” to 50 tunes. This is a chillout mix you can dance to, and a dance mix you can chillout to – wherever you spin it, you’ll find yourself venturing often in psychedelic territories, and moving from techno to progressive electronica, to house, dubstep and more unexpected takes. It’s a 5hrs+ rollercoaster trip – actually… are you ready for it? The recording time of this mix is exactly cut at 5.05.05.050 – 5 hours 05 minutes 05 seconds and 050 milliseconds, just to keep up with the numerology gimmicks!!! =) Lay back or dance, and enjoy it both ways! My three DJ sets at the Barcelona Burning Bash Weekend (also and even better known as BBB) are immediately available online by popular demand. Over the last months, while I have been recording all my DJ sets, I never had the time to actually timecode them, upload them to MixCloud, and create the relative blog posts. But this time here they are, merely one week after the event, and all three of them! So here we go, a deep techno set with some rave, old school moments, one morning dance set for a crowd who still wanted to keep grooving, and a sweet afternoon set in the sun by a pool – all in the same blog post, for faster sharing! One technical note: since we had some problens with acoustics at the main stage of BBB, the sets played there have very little bass – I guess you can fix that manually by pumping the bass up in your device. The poolside set has a more balanced sound, and very chilly dance tunes. More Amphora DJ sets from Burning Man 2013. This time I had the pleasure and the honor of “opening” for one of my favorite DJ posse on the Playa, Space Cowboys. At their “classic” Wednesday party at the Trash Fence Space Cowboy asked for the collaboration of all the top art cars on the playa – including Amphora of course. More than a dozen sound systems blasting the same music being broadcasted live from Unimog, the mighty sound system art car of the San Francisco DJ collective – and I provided the opening DJ set for the entire trip of Amphora till the party location, making sure to pump it up enough so to get the crowd ready for the all-night party mood. Here we go, the NeverFuckingStop Festival has finally arrived. My burners friends PiouPiou, Cocci and Matilduz have been planning to create a Burning Man-inspired festival for some times, and here it is. In a sunny spring day, at the Parc de la Villette in Paris, we took over My Boat, a club with a terrace and a view on the Parisienne channels, where artists, performers and burners gathered all day and night in a creative environment. And of course we danced. A lot. I played a starting set as Morphinauts, but I also had the pleasure and the honor to play the closing set of the night. I admit, this DJ set has been particularly furious, a true techno rave like I haven’t been playing for a while, after my exploration of the power-house beats from Suara – but I liked it, and everybody has been dancing like it’s Berling circa 1996. Third mixdeck in the trilogy series I dedicated to the powerful sound of the Barcelona-based independent label Suara Music, and here we go with another cat cover. After the Groovy Wild Catz and the Acid Catz mixdeck, it’s now time to explore the nu-disco and funky soul of Suara, with a selection that I’m sure will make you dance like it’s 1979 – or 1999 – or better said 2013, since the Suara sound it’s always infused with a very contemporary massive bass and techno beat, even when they go disco and funky! With this mixdeck I officially close my trilogy tribute to Suara Music, meaning that starting from the next mix there will be a larger variety of labels included in my mixdecks. Another mixdeck totally inspired by Suara Music, and of course another cat cover, just to pay homage to the amazing Barcelona-based label and the now classic artwork of their releases. Yesterday it was about Groovy Wild Catz; my selection for today’s mixdeck actually explores some of those Suara releases that dare to venture into spaced-out, dreamy and somehow “weird” dimensions, while still maintaining a strict “techno code” (what else?), albeit a bit acid every now and then. Yesterday I published a live DJ set that is tied to one of my saddest memories in DJing, but good thing I also have good ones. Like the day that I decided to explore the entire production of Suara Music, a Barcelona-based independent label that is, as they say on their website, “all about music and cats”. As a matter of fact, all the releases artwork of Suara feature a cat, some of them pretty wild – I love it! (Yes, I love cats too). Suara Music is run by Coyu, one of my favorite artists, often featured as producer or remixer on the tracks I play in my mixes and DJ sets – sooner or later I’ll remix one of his tracks, promised! I love the Suara sound, so I decided to pay a tribute to the Barcelona label by playing a full DJset mixing only Suara Music releases. And of course the cover I created for the mix is also pretty “inspired” by Suara records’ artwork. Enjoy! Meuw! My closing DJ set for the Burning Man-inspired Go Animal party at the Ice Cube Club in Zurich. Unfortunately, this is one of my saddest memories in DJing, as it will remind me forever of a very bad discussion I had with my girlfriend right at the end of the DJ set, that ended up in a broke-up – and now I feel so miserable I wish I never been to Zurich to play the gig. The trance-infused techno mix of this DJset is actually pretty awesome, so I hope that at least it will make someone happy – just not me. This studio mix has been recorded while I was following the (shameful) results of the recent Italian political elections 2013. I was pretty angry for the useless vote that resulted in a non-governable country and in a political chaos and more hard times for Italy. Which made me think at my good friend, burner and raver Miss Dusty Purple, who recently added a new ink job to her tattooed body, the awesome statement “Hard Times Require Furious Dancing” – yes, the one I used for the cover art of this mixdeck. Thanks Marghe! Furious Dancing? That was exactly what I needed to forget the elections, so I plugged my headphones and started mixing. This is the result of a very pissed off studio session, so there might be a couple of minor fuck-ups in the mix, but I hope you’ll enjoy it anyway. Remember: hard times? Just dance the worries away. Burning Night Paris is, in my opinion, the best Burning Man party in Europe, being even more intense than London Decompression, and also for the awesome location, the world-famous Moulin Rouge in Paris! Back to Rumpus, the amazing burlesque, costumed, wild London party organized by some burners friends, which is now considered to be one of the best “indoor festivals” in the UK, compared to “Secret Garden in the city”. After the post-apocalyptic theme of Rumpus 9, this time the party theme was “Pantos vs. Pirates” – of course I enrolled with the pirates, and delivered a “pirate techno set”. I played for just a bit less than one hour as I started late (had tech problems while plugging my gear), but it was enough to take an awesome pirate crowd in a dancefloor bliss state. Welcome to my house. A dreamy, twisted, psychedelic, vintage, uplifting, joyful deep techno house. After all “that noise”, here are 3hrs+ of happy progressive house beats. Sure, I infiltrate everywhere techno, trance and even dubstep, but the overall mood is uplifting and playful, even when it goes into psychedelic sounds. And yes, I dropped a lot of vintage beats, including two or three original tracks from the end of the ’80s and early ’90s. It’s been a lot of fun to mix it all, I hope you’ll have fun dancing to it! I have been inspired to mix deep tech house sounds after following Laurent Garnier in his latest tour, and catching up with gigs and dancing myself to bliss 10 times in one year in Rome, Madrid, Liverpool, Munich, Barcelona and elsewhere, including at festivals like Sonar and the Monegros Desert Festival. I even traveled with friends to Paris for the special night at the Rex Club dedicated by Monsieur Garnier to his fans to celebrate his 25th career anniversary as a dj. It’s been a beautiful epic night, and an amazing party with Laurent Garnier who mixed nonstop for more than 8 hours. That’s my boy. This playlist includes many tracks Laurent Garnier has been playing at his recent gigs. Thanks Maestro, and happy anniversary again! It took me a month to finally be able to publish the recording on my closing DJ set at London Decompression 2012. The reason is that my laptop died just a couple of days after the set, and my poor baby has been in the hospital (Apple assistance) until yesterday! A month and 420 Euro later (hey! 420 again!) I finally got it back. And here we are! The title Casualties on the Dancefloor came up while working on the London Decom playlist. “Really? Am I really going for remixed hardcore punk? Jeeee… I’m gonna make some casualties, this is pretty violent…“, but I decided to go for it anyway! I guess this has been the darkest and most violent sound I played live since I dj – I mean, the hard techno or overnoisy track every now and then or the super acid sets are part of the classic trademark sound of Burningmax live, but this is the first time I do a 1 hour 30 minutes set that can make your ears bleed. And I liked it, and people on the dancefloor too. I underestimated the level of aural resistance of the Decom crowd – they actually loved it and neverfuckingstop danced until the end at 6AM, leaving no casualties on the dancefloor at all! Sweet! Due to a number of things that happened last summer, including switching to a new laptop and moving to Barcelona, I thought I lost the recording of the live djset I played at the Manrusionica festival last June in Manresa (Barcelona). I’m very happy that I just found the recording of the live set in a back-up disk, so let me post it here before I lose it again! =) Manrusionica launched in 2011 as a collaborative 2.0 festival of electronic music and visual arts. This year at its second edition it replicated last year’s success by filling up with acts and live gigs the entire city of Manresa for 24 hrs, covering a large number of indoor and outdoor areas of the city with a full festival of electronic culture. Did I mention that Manrusionics is a no profit event and that access to all gigs, acts and performance areas is free for the public? Well done Manrusionica! This is the DJ set I played at MART (Museo di Arte Contemporanea di Rovereto e Trento) last night. The Italian contemporary art museum invited me to play a live set for “Hungry Like The Woolf“, a dance party inspired to Virginia Woolf and the Modernism, which I twisted into a “Angry Like The Woolf” live set. I kicked in with a stripper song, a remixed Ella Fitzgerald and some pimped up electroswing, but pretty soon I moved into the techno rave sounds I feel more comfortable with, and closed the live set by venturing into dubstep and psychedelic electronica, just to throw in a pinch of “dancefloor modernism“.
