Welcome to the Together Mansion, an amazing co-creators space in Trastevere, the heart of Rome. And welcome to Room Beats, the “packed small living room” version of the classic Boiler Room – the DJ at the center of the room, surrounded by an happy dancing crowd. A couple of weeks ago I have been invited to play at the closing event of the season, also closing the line-up after the sets of RoyTson and Estien – check them out, they are good! My Room Beats set has been defined by participants’ mood. I was not sure about the best sound to bring to a living room party – I thought people wanted cool, groovy beats, while I was ready to hit hard and rave – so we let participants decide by choosing a pill (obvious choice was blue or red) and putting it in a jar. Problem was that the responses were pretty much balanced between groove and rave, so I adapted and ended up kicking off with some groove techno tunes, to slowly move on to more acid, ravey sounds. Everybody loved it, and I had a great time. Can’t wait to play the Room Beats again! This is my 2hrs live set for the Rome-based hemp trade show and cannabis culture hub Canapa Mundi. The stage was supposed to be mainly dub, reggae and hip-hop but I couldn’t help and I had to drop a few techno beats, while surfing in and out of dub, reggae, hip-hop, bass music and the occasional drum’n’bass. The result is a pretty eclectic mix that should make you dance anyway, or at least nod while keeping rolling spliffs. I pitched for a 4-6PM DJ slot, as I wanted to play one of my infamous 420 Sessions, but unfortunately all the 4PM slots of the weekend were already taken. Have you tried liquid drum and bass for breakfast? It’s delicious! Try it with a mimosa cocktail or with a bloody mary, depending on your hungover state! =) I love liquid drum and bass, with its “logical progression” bass, its jungle beat and a bit of grime mixed up in a good measure. Liquid drum and bass tunes are beautiful, dreamful, uplifting. Soulful, luscious, sexy. A bit cheesy sometimes, specially on the lyrics and some piano or horns melodies, but it does its job delivering progressive bliss, and keeping pumping on the dancefloor. This is my very last at Nowhere 2017, 2 early morning hours that flew by smoothly. After my actual last closing set on Saturday night, when we had to respect sound policy and to switch off our Function One racks at 7AM, I’ve plugged the exit of my Traktor controller into a Minirig speaker and served some liquid drum and bass for breakfast to the last ravers who still want to keep dancing. Because we neverfuckingstop, remember? =) This year at Nowhere I’ve been playing every day, including before and after the official festival dates, and I selected 5 sets to share, those with mostly new tracks, and with different styles. One technical note about this liquid drum and bass set: since I played this set on small speakers without a proper subwoofer, and switching from Funktion One, I’ve “pumped up” the bass from my controller. My DJ set for the Burning Man event of Roman Burners in November 2016, an experiment I decided to make because after all, this is what Burning Man is about… I normally play techno and other electronica, from acid house to psychedelic beats, but I’ve never played drum’n’bass before, though I’ve been dancing to a lot of progressive D’n’B back in the ’90s. So I decided to finally drop the bass with the drum, while swinging back and forth from techno during the burn, with a session I like to call “techno’n’drum’burn”. Enjoy the bipolar beats!
